Social Responsibility

Shearwater birds inspired the name for ShearSpire, Inc. We actively support habitat for shearwater birds by donating to the Hawaii Audubon Society Freeman Seabird Preserve, now and phases 2 and 3.

A shearwater is a long-winged seabird known for its remarkable capabilities and performance. The flights of shearwaters represent the longest annual animal migration routes ever recorded using electronic tracking technology, at approximately 39,000 miles. The birds trace a figure-eight route around the Pacific Ocean that spans New Zealand to Alaska. Using a “shearing” flight technique they move across wave fronts visually scanning beneath the surface for food. Shearwater birds dive to depths as great as 225 feet to capture their food. They are also extraordinarily long-lived. The oldest known wild bird in the world was a shearwater that was banded and recovered alive at approximately 55 years old.
